Association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and cognitive performance in middle-aged and older European men” published in the May 21, 2009 issue of Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, & Psychiatry

As holistic practitioners, we are always concerned with helping to improve the function of the human body, and one primary concern that I always hear from my clients is a request for improvement in memory and general mental focus. There are many factors related to this of course, but here is an interesting study that correlates low vitamin D levels with lowered cognitive performance.

The researchers in the study observed 3133 men between the ages of 40 to 79 years old from Europe (as part of the European Male Aging Study) with low Vitamin D levels and found they performed worse on a standard test of cognitive ability than those with normal D3 levels. The University of Manchester researchers admit the difference wasn’t substantial but it was worth noting. The men over the age of 60 had the lowest levels of the group.

I’ve been monitoring vitamin D status in my practice for some time now, and I have yet to find a single individual with optimal vitamin D levels. I think it’s great that Energetix has added this critical nutrient to their line and am recommending it to both adults and children alike – just another great way to nutritionally support conditions like ADD and ADHD.

This is yet further evidence of the need for Vitamin D supplementation apart from the large body of research already performed relating to immune system function and bone metabolism.
