They say, “It takes a village to raise a child” and Saturday’s event (Dec 5th) at Center IMT showed that it takes “a village” to recover children from the autism spectrum. Each ASD child has unique needs, and as a consequence, responds differently to various techniques. The speakers looked at multiple modalities that are all proving successful in the treatment of these precious children, and synergy was always at the heart of the discussion.
The first speakers were Thomas Giammatteo D.C., P.T., I.M.T.,C. and Sharon Giammatteo Ph.D., P.T., founders of Integrative Manual Therapy (www.centerimt.com). IMT is a technique that combines skills from physical therapy, chiropractic, Chinese and BioEnergetic Medicine, as well as proprietary techniques. These skills are all aimed at optimizing organ and system function through a combination of hands-on therapy and functional nutrition. Key areas discussed included the importance of the cranial nerve and the sacrum, as well as removing blockages for optimal blood flow to the brain.
Next up were Lauren Stone Ph.D. and Sheila Reed H.H.P., both practitioners specializing in homotoxicology. They provided a theoretical overview as well as a series of fascinating case studies of children whose lives have been significantly improved by these techniques, including a number of full recoveries. What became clear was the undeniable synergy between homotoxicology, biomedical approaches (especially chelation), and manual therapy.
After lunch, Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo P.T., I.M.T.,C., director of pediatrics at Center IMT, shared some of her insights from her soon-to-be-completed post doctoral studies on IMT and Autism. Some common characteristics amongst these children are suboptimal brain function and chronic inflammation. Ayelet discussed some of the techniques they have used for those two central issues, including limbic support in the Energetix remedies Hypothalmapath and Neuro-Chord.
The last speaker was Todd Stelik, OTR/L, H.H.P., an occupational and cranial sacral therapist specializing in pediatrics. His talk on ‘BioEnergetic Testing through Cranial Rhythms’ brought together the three synergistic areas of discussion: homotoxicology, manual therapy and nutrition. He also discussed how he assesses to individualize and prioritize these solutions for each unique case.
We thank all of the speakers, attendees and Center IMT staff for making this such a successful event. Practitioners in attendance came from as far as New Jersey and New Hampshire, and the feedback was excellent. Watch this space for further training in 2010!
James Maskell, Energetix
