Superbugs and the Power of Prevention

I heard a brief news story today while reading the Sydney Morning Herald. The video report, “‘Superbug’ warning from drug experts” (http://bit.ly/cacxrq), outlines a growing concern by drug and medical experts of the spread of ‘superbugs,’ or antibiotic resistant bacteria. UK researchers have identified a new superbug that is resistant to most antibiotics. The discovery is fueling an already high-paced search for new antibiotics in the drug industry. The kicker is that the overuse of antibiotics seems to be the reason behind the emergence of these new superbugs.

When I hear such stories I have to wonder if there are alternative approaches that must be taken to help resolve such threats to human health and well being. One option worth consideration is to place more emphasis on prevention. A healthy immune system is theoretically more capable of dealing with xenobiotics, so strengthening our immune system would theoretically minimize the need for antibiotics in the first place.

There are many ways to fortify your immune system. Some of the most basic approaches include deeper, longer sleep, a clean diet, low in sugars and other refined ingredients and sufficient exercise. There are many excellent, passionate people around our country and the world working to educate the general public about how to make healthier lifestyle choices. One of my recent favorites is Jamie Oliver, the irrepressible Brit whose efforts to teach children and adults about the perils of our modern diet. If you haven’t seen this presentation on TED, I highly recommend that you take a few minutes to hear Jamie Oliver out. His points are well made and compelling: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jamie_oliver.html.

The important thing to remember is that you have options. No one can force you to live healthier. The choice is yours. Use your power of choice wisely!
