10 Things You Need to Know About Epstein Barr

Mar 30, 2011

Most everyone knows that the Epstein Barr virus causes Mononucleosis, but here are some interesting facts that you may not have known:

  1. Contrary to popular belief, Epstein Barr (EBV) is not a sexually transmitted disease.
  2. EBV is a member of the herpes virus family.
  3. It is most commonly transferred through saliva through close contact such as kissing,  sharing utensils or drinking glasses, etc. The virus is found in the saliva of those with and without active symptoms.
  4. It is one of the most common viruses out there. It is estimated that 50% of children in the USA have had EBV and between 90-95% of adults are carriers.
  5. Once infected, people become carriers of the EBV virus for life, though not everyone will experience symptoms.
  6. Children can become infected with EBV but only experience either very mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Infants experience no symptoms at all.
  7. EBV does not necessarily mean full-blown Mononucleosis will follow. When a teen or young adult is infected with EBV, it causes Mono only 35-50% of the time, likely when the immune system becomes compromised. Catching it early and supporting the body’s immune system can be a key to prevention.
  8. In rare cases, EBV can contribute to Berkins lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which are rare cancers not normally occurring in the United States, but it is not believed that EBV is the sole cause of either cancer.
  9. EBV does not cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as previously believed.
  10. If EBV does develop into full-blown Mononucleosis, it is important to know that 50% of people may experience an enlarged spleen and others may experience and an enlarged liver – and wouldn’t you know it, Mono-Chord contains homeopathic spleen and liver sarcodes!
